Summer Scholars Writing Academy
Immerse yourself in a supportive and stimulating environment as you enhance your creative and academic writing skills through the free Summer Scholars Writing Academy. The program offers current and incoming UC Davis students the opportunity to spend six weeks working on a variety of writing projects, including writing with nature, mapping your Davis experience and crafting zines. Students will engage with new writing situations that invite deeper engagement with audience, purpose and tone. Date and session times
Summer Session I: June 24-July 29
Summer Session II: Aug. 5-Sept. 9
Weekly meetings set for 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays during both summer sessions. All sessions take place in person only at the Writing Center, at the top of the Teaching and Learning Complex.
Advance registration is required and closes one week before the beginning of the program. Session I registration closes June 18.
Program highlights
Earn badges — Writers earn three distinct badges at each level by completing specific tasks. Level up your writing as you earn badges!
Creative writing exercises — Explore various genres and styles while honing the craft of writing and deepening connections to campus. Engage in dynamic activities such as creative expression and innovative thinking.
Writing support — Work one-on-one with writing consultants to develop sustainable writing practices, gain a deepened understanding of university writing expectations and practice writing in multiple genres and writing situations. Consultants aim support toward improving students’ understanding of disciplinary conventions and their ability to produce high-quality writing.
Writing group activities and discussions — Participate in interactive writing group activities and discussions that promote collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Designed to build a strong writing community and provide low-stakes and high-yield opportunities for students to explore voice, audience and purpose.
Expectations — Attend free weekly sessions and build community with fellow Aggie writers during the summer.
Outcomes
By the end of the academy, writing scholars should be able to
- effectively identify and engage with new writing situations
- gain practical skills and techniques to enhance their writing for academic purposes
- build confidence in their ability to express ideas effectively
- establish connections with peers and mentors within the writing community
- acquire knowledge and tools to demonstrate their communication skills in competitive job markets
